GoonersWorld can confirm that Arsenal have signed Mikael Silvestre from Manchester United for an undissclosed fee.

Silvestre, 31, was supposed to be undergoing a medical at local rivals City when he got a call telling him Arsenal were interested.

Silvestre immediately abandoned the medical to meet boss Arsene Wenger and discuss terms.

Arsene Wenger has been looking for experienced cover for Gael Clichy and he knows Silvestre fits the bill.

Arsene has followed his career with France and at United.

Silvestre joined United from Inter for £4m, he made 249 Premier League appearances in nearly nine years with United.

Arsene Wenger said:

“We have a strong squad but a young squad and Mikael’s versatility, experience and calibre will provide the extra depth we need to reinforce our challenge for honours this season. His defensive adaptability will serve us well and it’s a big plus that Mikael has top level experience and a great understanding of football in the Premier League.”
