Wenger confirms Gibbs will replace Clichy
Arsene Wenger confirmed today that he will not be signing a replacement for Gael Clichy and that he sees Kieran Gibbs as a ready made replacement.
When asked why he let Clichy go, Wenger said that “Kieran Gibbs at some time has to get a chance to play” and that “Gael only had one year left on his contract”.
Wenger has a lot of faith in Gibbs, adding “I rate very much highly Gael, but I rate as well hightly Kieran Gibbs. He is at an age now where he has to play”. Whilst some fans do not share Wenger’s faith and would like to see a replacement for Clichy signed, I am willing to trust Wenger’s judgement.
The left back position is one for which Wenger has a history of unearthing gems. After inheriting Winterburn as part of Arsenal’s best ever back four, Wenger has brought through the likes of Silvinho, Ashley Cole and Gael Clichy. Hopefully Gibbs will step up and make the left back position at Arsenal his own. I’d then like to see him take Cashley’s place in the England team!

Yeah great move if true. And then when he’s injured [which happens to be 90% of the time], Arsenal can begin their injury crisis in defence as they don’t have any replacement. Here we go again.
Agreed. Gibbs had plenty of chances last year but kept getting injured. Luckily we had Clichy. Now that Clichy is gone and Gibbs more often on treatment table than on the pitch, may God have mercy on us.
There were times when Arsene had my utmost respect, but now I have serious doubts about his sanity. We have lost three EPL titles in the last 4 years just because Arsene refused to give up his stubborn, though silly and nonsense, principles and failed to strengthen the squad at critical times.
Clichy wasn’t great last season but Gibbs was worse when played in his place. I understand the lad will get better but we need our defense to improve now not in 2 years. Wenger knows fuckall about defense.
Although Gibbs is a good player, he is prone to injuries and it is unwise by Wenger not to sign another left back just in case!

If I there’s something i know about football there’s a part of the team you need to be sold and have dependable players and that’s the defence….. Whats point of playing pretty tippy tappy football if we can’t stop goals going in at the other end…. For me that you score 2 we’ll score 3 attitude has gotta stop how many mistakes will it take before that idiot Wenger realise’s he’s wrong…… It doesn’t matter what formation you use 442, 433, 4231 if you cant defend it doesn’t make a blind bit of difference…. Gael’s gone and thank god cause he was a terrible left back he made too many errors but believe me Gibbs is not the answer to our full back problems….
Yeah!!! Wengers right, we were close last season very close but the thing is it we should of been miles a head of everyone else cause….. a) we play better football than every team in the league…. b) for me that was the worse United side I have even seen but they still won….. c) Chelsea had a really bad start to their campane so they should never of court us never mind pass us…. d) City last season weren’t ready to take on the league title but this season coming might be a different story…… Next seasons gonna be harder so Wenger better sort out our short comings which every pundit up and down the country likes to point out “Arsenal’s biggest problem their rubbish defence”…….

I would rather we play traore than Gibbs.Gibbs is too much attack minded as is not fast to track back from an offensive position.Traore on the other hand is both attack minded and fast.
Gibbs can fill in the void created by the departure of Clitchy, but Wenger should understand that the Gibbs is injury prone. Arsenal needs a back up on the left side of its defence to avoid crises in the course of the season.
